Hello everyone.
I am Jesse Matilainen, born in Finland back in 1992. At a very young age I always was very active with sports. I was mainly playing ice hockey at the age of 7-12 but it came to a stop as my back had started hurting. It wasn’t until the end of year 2008 I lost the feeling of my left leg then it was found out that I had scoliosis.
I had surgery few weeks before I turned 17. After the surgery I had no feeling in my legs and I was told there would be a chance I would never walk again. Then I spent 3 years rehabilitating myself, slowly working on being stronger and being able to continue living life normally.
Then I started weight training at the age of 20. I was told by my doctor that I can do anything that feels good so I kept doing it. At the start I was afraid of adding weights but somehow I gained courage to try to push myself even further. I had trained with weights for about 6 months when I tried deadlifting for the first time and I pulled 210kg. Month after I pulled 260 and about 4 months after I managed to pull 300kg. All this within a year’s time.
I started training for powerlifting competitions but it felt boring to me to concentrate on 3 lifts. I visited a gym nearby which had atlas stones and farmer’s walk handles. And I was hooked instantly. I have been doing strongman for about one year and a half now and I feel like I have found my own sport.
My best lifts so far in the gym has been
340 kg raw deadlift
360 kg equipped deadlift
220 kg front squat
160 kg push press
142,5 kg log press.
My goal in the future is to win Finland’s strongest man and to be able to compete abroad. Thankfully Ano has decided to support me in these goals! I look forward to prove myself as a serious competitor to everyone.
